PAGE LAYOUT2024
Nine hours of ad and page work, down to five and a half.
A weekly paper dummied its pages by hand from spreadsheets, with almost no room for a late change. PageScout reads the booked ads straight out of AccountScout and places them inside InDesign - about 182 hours a year handed back to the production desk.

Background
This publisher grew past the point where its pages could sensibly be dummied by hand. Designers worked from spreadsheets derived from AccountScout manifests - a manual step that slowed production and left almost no room for a late change.
The problem
- Pages were dummied by hand as the number of communities to cover grew
- Designers worked from spreadsheets derived from AccountScout manifests
- The manual step slowed production and left little room for last-minute changes
What changed
- Ad schedules already come from the sales entries, so designers start laying out pages immediately
- Designers either drag and drop or follow layout rules, at any ad dimension
- Camera-ready ads display on the page, and a reserved block carries the ad's details until the ad exists
- Finished pages flow into InDesign, and a late ad is retrievable at the push of a button
“PageScout completely transformed how we manage our page layout. It has saved us an exceptional amount of time. And I haven't even put a pencil to how it has benefitted the newsroom.”
No waiting on a report
Because the ad schedule is generated from the sales entries, designers no longer wait for an extra report or an approval before they can start. The page plan is there as soon as the ads are booked.
The ads on the page are the right ads
Camera-ready ads render in position, so a designer sees the actual advertisement rather than a grey box. Where a block is reserved for an ad that has not been built yet, the block carries that ad's details - immediate feedback, and accuracy in production.
Late changes stopped being a crisis
Late ads are retrievable from inside InDesign with a simple fetch, even after editorial work has begun. Speed improved most where it hurt most, which is the hour before the deadline rather than the quiet part of the week.
Adoption
The team was productive within a week. The core functionality has been effective enough that they have not yet needed to explore the features added since they implemented it.
What the newsroom got
Pages finish sooner, which matters most in the weeks the team is short-staffed. The time saved on layout is measured; the benefit to the newsroom, by the owner's own account, has not even been counted yet.
